Reflection

I loved learning about all the tools. The tools that I can see myself using more than once in my classroom are photostory, google docs, a blog, apps, videos, almost all.

The ones that are not listed are probably because I am still not too comfortable using them....yet. This is where I can pull my team for suggestions.

11 tools has changed my view for technology that is for sure. There are so many programs out that can truly help simplify your day just a wee bit more. I feel like now that I have learned about them and how to use them, it is my responsibility to go out and show at least one person how to use them.

Before starting the tools I had no idea what to expect, I totally enjoyed reading Westwood responses and learning just a little more about them.

:)

Tool # Once

Digital citizenship

I always educate people on the importance of being technologically literate. Our world consists of technology everywhere we go, in everything we do and for the most part see. Our students need to be able to hold their ground in this competitive world we live in, and that especially includes understanding technology.

Being a good digital citizen includes understanding how to use it correctly. As a student it means understanding how to use the information safely and legally. Understanding how to cite properly and giving due credit where needed. As an adult (young) it also means using it responsibly, understanding that posting something on the web means that it is ALL available for everyone to see. The good and the bad.

For children it means learning how to be safe on the Internet. Understanding that not all can be trusted. Understanding the ugly and the scary about the Internet. Taking responsibility for the sites they use and choose to enter. For parents it means staying on top of things and ahead of your children. Allowing Internet access responsibly, and understanding the dangers for children on the Internet and talking to their kiddos about them.

Lastly I think cyber bullying is an extremely important one to discuss. Students and adults alike do not always understand what this is or looks like until it becomes a horror story on the news. Teaching students that what we post on the web should reflect who we are as a person.

I love APPS!!!! they make my life much more manageable.

I have found myself defending the fact that we will have ipods in the classroom, everyone always wants to know why you need them.

When this conversation begins I turn to my Noah, who has begun to write his numbers and letters, there is an app that we use that allows him to trace with his fingers numbers and letters, after doing this for a while he will usually ask for pencil and paper and attempt to write them himself. He is only 3 but already ahead of the game:)

Tool # Nueve

I like the idea of bringing field trips to the students. I can only imagine how tight a budget is for grade levels, field trips are almost non-existent these days. We can use skype to bring the field trips to the students vs. the old traditional way. We could even go as far as treating it as an actual trip, where students plan for and prepare for the trip through skype.

Videos are an excellent way to help aid important information. They are a great resource in the classroom. I love how accessible they are, it only takes a few minutes on our part to check if a video is useful, but for a student, the message in the video can last a life time. I decided on Bill Nye videos, I grew up watching this guy!

Tool # Siete

PhotoStory was fun, Ive used it before...It is pretty simple to use. It gets tricky when you try to get fancy with it. I can totally see how you can use this as a mini re-teach. It would be neat to have videos available for the kiddos to use when they need a little reminder on how to complete a task.

Student generated photostories would be even better, they could teach themselves. Photostory is a great tool to use for student projects.

WIKI!!!!! I can remember one of my last semesters at UH we had to collaborate on a Wiki with our supervisors. Here we were supposed to schedule our observations, submit our lesson plans, and reserve and check out our media equipment.

It was a headache to have to learn how to navigate in such a short time, but now that I think about it...it was very useful. A kind of one stop shop. At the end of the semester we even used it as a sign up sheet for who was bringing what to our goodbye party.

I never thought about using it in the classroom, when we learned how to use wiki, it was kind of a learn it quick your gonna use it starting now attitude, we never got a nice introduction as we did here on 11 Tools.

I liked the idea of using a wiki to collaborate with students from all around. I also think it would be a great way for communication with fellow team members :)

Tool # Cinco

I almost forgot I had a delicious account, while at UH we student teachers were always looking for a leg up on online resources. Our professor had infinite number of web pages that she gave us all access to, today I found myself trying to filter out the ones that I found least helpful.

I found myself searching for math games, not only for the content that I am going to teach, but we also let our daughter play them at home...
She liked...
www.funbrain.com She said it was easy to navigate.

www.coolmath4kids.com She said it was fun to navigate, and she liked how she could review before playing a game.

I made sure to bookmark these two links for her. I am actually going to pass them along to my friends who have asked me for links to visit with their kiddos. Which brings up how easily one can share their bookmarks with people. I like how you can organize your links, it is a useful way to find information quickly.

Tool # Cuatro

I love Google documents and all that go with it. The possibilities are endless in the classroom, but not only for the students. Teachers could also benefit from this. I have actually taken part on a google form that was used as an RSVP, and as a way to choose your entree (smart).

I wrote about letting students keep a blog, and how a teacher could respond and leave feedback to her students, but I never thought about the managing of the blogs and responses. Google reader has taken all the guess work out of that idea. To be able to manage all of the blogs you follow from one spot is just too easy!

Tool # Tres

I totally enjoyed using the all the tools, and was eager for someone to see what I had created.

That was my light bulb moment...

We can talk about using technology in the classroom all day long, we can even talk about letting the kiddos blog, and although we all get excited about using it, to the students it can become "just another assignment". The key to making 11Tools not "just another training" is getting introduced to all the cool gadgets on the Internet....I mean lets be real, we had to be motivated by something to actually get us to do training from home, well that and getting to do it in my PJ's worked for me:)

Allowing the students to personalize their creations is key to getting them to turn the computer on and ask someone to see and read what they have posted on the weekends. I know that we all have great ideas on using these tools in the classroom, but sometimes the most basic is the answer!

Tool # Dos

PLN are a great way for people to communicate...at UH we used them as a way to stay connected with other student teachers. Due to the fact that we were only on campus a few times our last semester, our PLN was very important. The society we live in today is always on the go....information that is mobile is key...

PLN are a great way for teams to communicate with one another especially when the comments left are meaningful and easy to respond...I guess the only problem with me at first was remembering to actually log on to the site that we all agreed to use. Once we all became comfortable with it, it became easy...

This is actually blog #2 for me. I had to create one for UH and if I was asked to find it now I am not sure I could. I do like blogs, its kinda like talking to yourself, or a journal...to sound less crazy, I only wish I actually had time, or better yet the discipline to sit and reflect on one.

Creating the avatar was cool, a little weird at first...I could not change the voice of my ~Hola Girl~ and so she had a dude's voice...like I said, weird!

I would really like to use blogging in my classroom, I feel as though the kiddos could use it as a form of self expression. Once they get past the creating (decorating), they could very well benefit from it. We could use it as a form of communication in the classroom between the students and me, where I could go back and post comments and answer questions.
